First Steps After Discovering Water Damage at Home
A calm, practical checklist for the moments after you find water where it should not be: what to do, what to avoid, and what to have ready when you call.
Finding water in your home is stressful. Taking a few careful steps can help you stay safe and make it easier to explain the situation when you contact a restoration team.
1. Put safety first
Stay out of rooms with standing water if electrical outlets, cords, or appliances may be in contact with it. If it is safe to do so, turn off power to the affected area at the breaker panel. If you are unsure, do not enter the area.
2. Stop the source if you can
If the water comes from a plumbing fixture or appliance, close the shutoff valve nearby or the main water valve to your home. If the source is a roof or window leak, contain what you safely can and keep the area clear.
3. Protect your belongings
Lift small items, rugs, and furniture out of the wet area when it is safe. Avoid moving heavy furniture on wet floors.
4. Take photos and notes
Photograph the affected areas and write down when you noticed the water and where it appeared to start. Clear notes help everyone understand what happened.
